Self-aware Poems & Poems About Poetry

Self-aware Poems & Poems About Poetry

"THERE'S A POEM IN THE MIRROR! I SEE IT!"

“THERE’S A POEM IN THE MIRROR! I SEE IT!”

Poems that know that they’re poems, or critique poetry, seem to have harnessed a bad reputation, a ball-gag that tastes like filth.

I dig them though.  Poems that are passionate and provoke emotion are good poems, at least in my little corner of subjectivity.  I dig writing that employs strong images, and leaves a taste of itself (whether sour, sweet,…

Meet Meko

We’ve rescued a baby raccoon, wandered the streets of Albany, N.Y., prevented drunken buffoons from wandering into the highway, spent all nighters screaming at the Internet and smashing our skulls against social media, writing and re-writing, interviewing, throwing ourselves around physically, financially, and mentally.

We have no option but to do so.  There is no room for surrender, as…

Traveling Bookstore is planning a tour around the country in what will presumably be a relatively beat up station wagon and/or van. Inside that will be books, chapbooks, CDs, etc. really anything that can touch the soul. With the money raised by the campaign the merry band of Traveling Bookstore fanatics can distribute the new words to whoever is interested. Particularly nice is the complete inclusion of all art. Beyond Alt Lit, beyond Beat, this will try to include whatever items can be included. Music, literature it will all be there.

“Poetry has immense power in the community, however it is generally thought of as a dead art. One of the goals of Weasel Press is to help push poetry into a larger light. We have never needed poetry more than we do today…

Weasel Press is not the only one bringing poetry to the masses. I have stumbled upon an intriguing project set out to travel across the United States as a Traveling Bookstore.…

Poets, come out of your closets

“Books & Shovels was not initially a station wagon. It was a frame pack on the back of founder Jeremiah Walton, a 19 year old poet from New Hampshire, U.S.A.. Hitchhiking at the time, Jeremiah operated a small distribution operation, street performing and hitting shows to spread the publications he released through his indie press, Nostrovia! Poetry, and for UndergroundBooks, a New York City publishing house. Books & Shovels had not even been named yet at this point. It was simply a new adventure for the recent high school graduate.”

Writer’s Edit, an Australian publication, covers the history of Books & Shovels, where it’s going, and how we are taking 21st Century Poetry by the throat.

Passion Wars

Q: When you first approached me with your project, you mentioned Passionate Living over Making a Living. I love this concept. Can you tell me about your own journey to passionate living?

A: To be honest, it happened before I had the words for it. It’s simply how my brain is wired. Poetry clicked. Since it’s clicked, I’ve thrown myself recklessly against it. It’s what I’ve decided to do with my…

"Poets, come out of your closets,
Open your windows, open your doors,
You have been holed-up too long
in your closed worlds.”

-Lawrence Ferlinghetti

Over $1000 has been raised for launching our traveling bookstore, and 100s of books and publications have been donated to the cause. Your pledges will assist fighting apathy across the country, and pushing Passionate Living over Making A Living. Literary Manhatten, Writer’s Edits, The Baffler, among many other supporters have assisted in pushing this project forward. To everyone involved, thank you.

Cheers!
